The more expensive car does not necessarily mean the more costly to insure. This review will focus on the general costs between the two automobile manufacturers.
Types of Ford and Honda Cars and Trucks
As an example, the cost of a 2016 Ford F150 truck starts at nearly $26,500, while a 2016 Ford Focus will cost about $17,225. However, the average cost to insure the pickup truck is about 30% less than the smaller car.
Another popular Ford model is the Ford Mustang. A sports car with a powerful engine and extremely sleek looks, the 2016 Ford Mustang has starting cost of just over $24,000.
The Honda vehicles that will be studied in this review include the Honda Civic, a two- or four-door sedan with excellent gas mileage, and a Honda CR-V, a sport utility vehicle.
Based on various studies, including quotes from insurance providers, there is no correlation between the overall purchase price of the car and its insurance rates.

Studies Involving Car Insurance Rates of Ford and Honda Cars and Trucks
To determine the cost of car insurance of Ford and Honda cars and trucks, premium quotes were gathered from various insurance companies.
Ford cars and trucks from the years 2006-2009 were studied, and the quotes were based on single drivers who were driving during the first two quarters of 2009.
The Ford Focus, despite being the least expensive of the three Ford automobiles that were looked at in the study, had an average insurance premium of almost 30% more than the F150.
The F150 had an average premium cost of about $2,500, while the Ford Focus has an average yearly premium cost of $3,145. The Ford Mustang has an average cost of approximately $3,000.
The Honda Civic had an average insurance premium of $1,670 while the Honda CR-V has a rate that averages about $1,258 per year.
When looking at percentages, the Focus cost about 25% more to insure than the Mustang, even though the Mustang’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price is about 40% higher than the Focus.
The average price of a 2010 Honda Civic was around $15,000 while the Honda CR-V retails for about $24,000.
Overall Cost Compared to Safety Features
The main reason that the insurance rate of the Focus is less than both the F150 and the Mustang has nothing to do with the sticker price.
In fact, the safety ratings of the Focus are lower than the F150 and the Mustang. With only four stars out of five, it is more of a risk for insurance companies to insure a Focus.
This is because if there is an accident with the Focus, the odds are greater that someone inside the car will be injured.
A higher risk of injury equals a higher premium cost.
In addition, a Focus will most likely have more damage if involved in an accident. This will also cause higher rates. The CR-V costs less to insure because it is considered a safer vehicle than the Civic.
Both the Ford Mustang and Ford F150 have safety ratings of five out of five by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Insurance Savings for Ford and Honda Cars and Trucks
As far as total insurance savings, the Ford Focus has a wider range in total premium costs, meaning that there is more of an opportunity to save money if you own a Focus.
The average insurance cost of a Focus ranged from about $2,000 to $4,000, a potential difference of about $2,000, The F150 had a positional difference of $1,275 and the Mustang had a difference of about $1,400.
The Civic and the CR-V had total differences of about $1,000 each. In fact, because the CR-V is considered a small SUV, it does well in the comprehensive category and is considered better than average.
It is extremely important to compare multiple quotes from many different insurance companies and to make sure that you are looking at all options.
