How do auto insurance monthly rates in the Sunshine State differ for a male and a female driver with similar driving records, jobs, and cars?
How did we conduct our study?
We carefully designed our study to determine how much major auto insurers in Florida would charge for a female or a male driver. First, we created profiles for two drivers with the same characteristics:
- Age
- Year, make, and model of car
- Annual commuting mileage
- Type of job
The only difference between the two sample Florida drivers was their gender.
One was male and the other female. Jane Doe is a single 25-year-old woman employed as a computer programmer. She drives a five-year-old, four-door Nissan Altima, has a one-year-old speeding ticket, and has had insurance in Florida for more than three years.
John Doe is also a single computer programmer and is also 25 years old. He also drives a five-year-old Nissan Altima with four doors, has a speeding ticket, and has continuously had insurance in Florida for more than three years.
Both drivers put an average of 13,000 to 14,000 miles a year on their cars.
We followed a script when we contacted insurance companies. We requested quotes for three tiers of each company’s basic levels of Florida car insurance.
Some companies gave us discounts, but we did not ask for them. We did not ask the companies for uninsured motorist coverage. You can see all our data here.

Which companies did we contact for car insurance quotes in Florida?
We contacted two of the largest national auto insurers about our fictional male and female 25-year-old drivers in Florida. Geico and Progressive provided us with one month and six-month premiums for the following levels of car insurance:
- Basic
- Choice
- Preferred
The results were surprising. Car insurance regulations vary from state to state, and each company handles the process of generating quotes differently.
Now that we’ve followed this process, it’s even clearer that getting different quotes on car insurance can not only keep your monthly premiums lower, it can also give you information to help choose the right insurance policy for your needs. (For more information, read our “Florida Car Insurance Regulations”).
How much are male vs. female drivers’ auto insurance premiums in Florida?
When we contacted Geico and Progressive for monthly auto insurance rates in Florida, we didn’t know what the companies would say. The results showed a gender bias, especially from one company — Progressive.
Based on these quotes, it does seem likely that female drivers could have higher monthly premiums than male drivers with similar driving records, jobs, annual mileage, and vehicles.
Progressive Quotes for Men and Women
Progressive had the highest monthly insurance rates we found in Florida. Progressive’s rates would cost a female Florida driver $23.37 more a month for an identical policy the company would offer to a male driver. Take a look at the rates below for comparative purposes.
Female quotes:
- Basic plan: $199.92 a month with a $103.44 down payment, or a total of $926 for a six-month policy
- Choice plan: $251.73 a month
- Recommended plan: $500 deductible for collision and comprehensive coverage, $411.51 a month
Male quotes:
- Rasic plan: $176.55 a month with a $91.28 down payment, or $824 for a six-month policy paid in full
- Choice plan: $231.08 a month
- Recommended plan: $500 deductible and $366.77 a month
Progressive quoted the recommended policy at $44.74 a month less than the same policy offered to Jane Doe.
Geico Quotes for Men and Women
Geico’s car insurance monthly rates in Florida were lower than Progressive’s for the two 25-year-old computer programmers. Geico asked the female driver to pay slightly more than the male driver. Jane Doe’s premium was $2.08 a month more than John Doe’s.
Female quotes: $106.12 a month or $606.70 for a six-month basic car insurance policy paid-in-full.
Male quotes: $104.20 a month or $595.20 for a six-month policy paid-in-full.
Geico quotes did not include Comprehensive & Collision coverage. The basic Geico plan was similar to Progressive’s basic coverage, which also didn’t include Comprehensive & Collision.
At $199.92 a month for a 25-year-old female driver, Progressive’s monthly premiums were 88 percent higher than Geico’s.
Florida is one of the states where at least one insurance company offered significantly higher monthly premiums for female drivers. A few states do have higher prices for male drivers, and others, including Minnesota, have higher prices for female drivers.
What other factors affect your auto insurance rates?
Your credit rating can affect your car insurance rate in Florida. Some states, including Massachusetts and California, prohibit car insurance companies from using a customer’s credit score in quoting rates. Florida isn’t one of them.
Insurance companies in a number of states can base their premiums on a special form of insurance credit score. In 2015, Consumer Reports conducted a survey of insurance companies in all 50 states and found out that Florida rates could vary widely depending on credit scores.
Drivers in Florida with poor credit scores could be asked to pay up to $2,400 more a year for car insurance.
Even drivers with good credit but a DWI conviction paid lower premiums than drivers with clean driving records and poor credit in Consumer Reports’ Florida car insurance survey.
The main factors that impact your premiums are as follows:
- Your credit score
- Your driving record
- Your location
- Your marital status
- The use of your vehicle
- Your job
Did you know married drivers pay less for auto insurance?
Driving history is probably the most significant factor when it comes to your car insurance rates. A person with a clean driving record will have a much easier time finding cheap auto insurance than someone with even a single speeding ticket or at-fault accident on their record.
Those with multiple infractions on their records may be designated high risk. High-risk drivers pay the highest rates.
Of course, the types of auto insurance coverage and the coverage limits you choose will also affect your rates. If you buy only liability coverage and skip collision and comprehensive insurance, you’ll save money on your monthly rates but you’ll pay more in the long run if you’re in an expensive accident.
